The Best Time of Year for Family Photos in Baltimore & Annapolis (Spoiler: It’s Not What You Think)

The Best Time of Year for Family Photos in Baltimore & Annapolis (Spoiler: It’s Not What You Think)

Okay mama, let’s have a real talk. You’ve been meaning to book family photos for… how long now? Six months? A year? Since your youngest was still in that “won’t hold still for two seconds” phase and is now somehow asking you for a phone?

I get it. Between school drop off, the business you’re building at 11pm after everyone’s in bed, and trying to remember the last time you and your husband had a conversation that wasn’t about the grocery list, “when should we do family photos” keeps sliding to the bottom of the list. So let’s fix that today, friend to friend.

Everyone Asks Me the Same Question

As a family photographer serving Baltimore, Annapolis, Severna Park, Towson, and Crofton, I hear this question on repeat: “What’s the best time of year for family photos in Maryland?”

And honestly? I love this question because the real answer is going to take some pressure off you.

The “Traditional” Answer (Because You Probably Want It)

If we’re talking classic outdoor family photography in Anne Arundel County, fall is the golden child. Literally. The light gets soft and warm, the humidity finally backs off so nobody’s hair is doing something unplanned, and those gorgeous Maryland trees turn every shade of amber and rust behind your family. Early spring is a close second, when everything is blooming and green without the summer heat making your toddler melt down by photo number twelve.

Outdoor sessions timed right, golden hour in October, a soft spring morning before it gets sticky, genuinely produce some of the most stunning, editorial-feeling images. There’s a reason it’s popular. When Maryland shows off, she really shows off.

But Here’s My Honest Take on when to hire a family photographer in Maryland

I don’t take myself too seriously, and I don’t think you should either when it comes to “getting it right.” Because here’s the thing about waiting for the perfect outdoor season: you’ll wait. And wait. And then it’ll be too hot, then too buggy, then too cold, then your kid will have a cold, and suddenly it’s been three years since your last family photos and your baby isn’t a baby anymore.

So can we just agree on something together? Any time of year is the right time for family photos. The season you’re overthinking is the season that’s currently passing you by. Pick a date, put it on the calendar like the appointment it is, and let’s just get it done. I promise you will never regret having the photos. You will only regret not having them.

This Is Exactly Why I Have a Private Photography Studio near Annapolis

This is the part where I get to brag a little on your behalf, not mine. My private studio is tucked away in Pasadena, Maryland, which means families from Baltimore, Annapolis, Severna Park, Towson, and Crofton don’t have to gamble on the weather, the season, or whether the light is going to cooperate. No rain delays. No “it’s supposed to be 95 degrees and everyone’s melting in their coordinated outfits.” No hoping the sun sets at a decent time so we’re not rushing.

Inside my studio, we control everything. The lighting is perfect every single time. The temperature is comfortable every single time. Your toddler isn’t getting eaten alive by mosquitoes and your teenager isn’t complaining about the heat ruining their hair. We just show up, get comfortable, and make magic happen, regardless of what Maryland weather decides to do that week.

That’s my whole process philosophy in a nutshell. I plan every detail of your session ahead of time so you’re not the one stressing about logistics. You just show up and be your family. I’ll handle the rest.

Let’s Talk About Santa Sessions

If you’re local to Anne Arundel County and you haven’t experienced one of my Santa mini sessions yet, we need to fix that. Every single year, clients tell me it’s the highlight of their entire holiday season, and I don’t say that lightly. There’s something about seeing your kids’ faces light up with Santa, captured in a private studio setting with zero mall lines and zero cranky toddlers waiting their turn, that just hits different.

It’s fun, it’s fast, it’s ridiculously cute, and you walk away with images you’ll be printing on cards and hanging on your wall for years. If your family is growing and evolving (aren’t we all), a Santa session is such a joyful way to document this exact chapter, tantrums, gap teeth, too-cool-for-this tweens and all.

A Little Something About Why I Do This

I’m a mom too. I’m juggling raising teens and tweens, building a business, keeping my marriage a priority, and trying to figure out what’s for dinner, usually all before 9am. I know what it’s like to be stretched in fifteen directions and still want to show up for the moments that matter.

I also believe pretty strongly that not everything needs to be a teachable moment, with my kids or with my clients. Sometimes you just need someone to make the experience easy, fun, and real, without the pressure of forced smiles or that overdone, cookie cutter, seen-a-million-times family photo. My clients and I tend to agree on that one. We want real. We want fun. We want you.

At the end of the day, the reason I show up and do this work, session after session, is my daughters. I want them to watch their mom build something she loves, on her own terms, and know they can do the exact same thing someday. If booking your family session helps me model that a little more for them, well, that’s a pretty good trade.

So, When Should You Book your Maryland family photography session?

Truly? Now. This week. Whatever season we’re in right now.

If you want that golden, outdoor, editorial look, let’s talk about timing it for fall or spring. If you want zero stress about weather, lighting, or the calendar, my private studio in Pasadena is ready for you any day of the year. And if the holidays are creeping up, grab a spot at my Santa mini sessions before they fill up, because they always do.

Whatever you choose, don’t let “the perfect time” become the reason it never happens. Your family right now, exactly as it is today, is worth photographing. Let’s get you on the calendar, friend.
