Okay mama. Let’s talk about something nobody tells you before you’re 37 weeks pregnant and suddenly panicking about it: newborn photos have a timeline, and it’s a lot shorter than you think.
I’m Amanda, a newborn photographer in Pasadena, MD, right in the middle of the Baltimore and Annapolis area, and I’ve had this exact conversation more times than I can count. A mom reaches out, baby’s already three weeks old, and she’s asking if it’s too late. So let’s fix that right now, before you’re in that spot.
Here’s your full guide to timing, planning, and booking your newborn session with an Annapolis Newborn Photographer, written like I’m talking to my best friend who just found out she’s having a baby (congratulations, by the way).
Newborn photos aren’t just “baby pictures.” The sleepy curled up poses, the tiny yawns, the way their fingers wrap around yours, all of that is only possible in a short window right after birth. Once your baby hits that two to three week mark, they start to wake up more, stretch out, and lose that curled up newborn look. Nothing wrong with that. It’s just a different kind of cute, and it means we lose the chance to capture those true newborn poses.
This is exactly why I don’t do a lot of the overdone, cookie cutter setups you’ve probably seen a million times on Pinterest. My style is built around what your baby is actually like in that fleeting newborn stage, styled in a way that feels unique to your family, not like it was copy and pasted from someone else’s session.
Generally, the sweet spot is **5 to 14 days old**. This is when babies are still sleepy, curl up naturally, and tolerate the gentle repositioning that creates those classic newborn poses.
- **Every baby is different.** Some babies are still workable at 3 weeks, some are more alert by day 10. I always build in flexibility for this.
- **Preemies follow a different timeline.** We’ll base your session on your baby’s adjusted age, not their actual birth date.
- **Booking a date is not the same as locking in a shoot date.** More on that below, because this is the part that trips people up.
Here’s the thing I wish every mom knew before her third trimester ends. **You need to book your newborn session before your baby arrives, not after.**
I know, I know. You’ve got a hospital bag to pack and approximately four hundred other things on your mind. But newborn photographers, myself included, only take a limited number of sessions each month specifically so we can stay flexible around actual birth dates. That means spots fill up in advance, especially during popular due date seasons.
**book your session by the start of your third trimester.** This locks in your spot on my calendar, and then once baby arrives, we simply confirm your actual shoot date based on their birthday. You’re not committing to an exact day months in advance. You’re just making sure there’s room for you when the time comes.
Life happens. Babies come early, come late, or that first sleepless week just gets away from you. If you’re past the two week mark, don’t panic and don’t assume you missed your chance entirely.
We can still create a beautiful session, it just shifts in style. Instead of the deep curled poses, we lean into more awake, alert imagery, or a fresh 48 session style approach if baby is still quite young. I’d rather have an honest conversation with you about what’s realistic than let you stress over a deadline that’s already passed. This is something I actually walk through with every client, because a real conversation is so much more helpful than a generic rule.
Take a look at baby M's photos below. We did these at 1 month! All babies are different and it's okay to book your newborn shoot a little out of the 'perfect' window.
One of the biggest fears I hear from moms is not knowing what to expect. Totally fair, you’re growing a tiny human and possibly also holding down a job, a marriage, and everyone else’s needs before your own. So here’s exactly how working with me looks, start to finish, no surprises.
You send an inquiry, tell me a little about you and your due date, and we go from there.
This is a quick phone call where we talk through the whole process, answer any questions you have, and I get a feel for what you’re envisioning for your session.
Once you’re booked, we hop on a Zoom call to actually get to know each other face to face. This is where we plan every detail together, colors, theme, wardrobe, props, all of it. You are never showing up wondering what to expect. It’s fully mapped out ahead of time, alongside you.
Your session takes place in my private, cozy studio in Pasadena, Maryland, fully stocked with everything your session needs. Wraps, blankets, headbands, props, all of it. You genuinely do not need to bring anything but your baby (and maybe a diaper bag, just in case). I also keep a client closet stocked with over 250 pieces, including newborn outfits and beautiful dresses for moms and big sisters, so you always have options even if you didn’t plan an outfit in advance.
Sessions run about **two hours**, giving us plenty of time to keep baby comfortable, fed, and cozy throughout.
After your session, we hop on another Zoom call where I walk you through your gallery and help you choose your favorites for your package. No pressure, no confusing spreadsheets, just a real conversation about which images you love most.
Digital images are delivered within **two weeks**. If you’re ordering prints or an album, those typically take up to **four weeks** to arrive.
A lot of moms assume in-home sessions are less stressful, but honestly, it’s usually the opposite. In your own home, you’re the one making sure the space is clean, warm enough, and set up right, all while recovering from birth and running on approximately zero sleep.
In my Pasadena studio, that pressure is completely gone. The temperature is set, the setups are ready, the wardrobe is stocked, and I’ve already planned every detail with you ahead of time on our Zoom call. You just show up with your baby. That’s genuinely the whole job on your end when you work with a Baltimore Newborn Photographer.
I didn’t get into newborn photography to create the same generic setup over and over. I got into this to give families something that actually feels like them, styled beautifully, but never cookie cutter. Somewhere between juggling my own kids, my marriage, and building this business, I found the thing that keeps me going: showing my own daughters that you can build a career doing something you truly love. That’s a big part of why every session I create is intentional, planned, and personal, not a copy of a Pinterest board.
Ideally by your third trimester, so your spot is secured before baby arrives.
No problem. We simply adjust your session date based on baby’s actual arrival.
Just your baby. My studio and client closet have the rest covered.
My private studio is in Pasadena, MD, conveniently located for families throughout the Annapolis and Baltimore area.
Digital images within two weeks, prints and albums within four weeks.
