Okay mama, let's talk about the thing that stresses out literally every single client before their session. What in the world do I wear.
I get this question more than almost anything else, and I get it. You are growing an entire human, your body is changing daily, and now you also have to figure out an outfit that makes you feel gorgeous instead of like you're wearing a tent. As a Maryland maternity photographer who has styled hundreds of sessions, I promise you this part does not have to be stressful. That is actually my whole job. Let's break it down like we are best friends getting ready for a night out, because honestly, that is kind of what we are doing here.
Here is the tip I give every single client, every single time. Think about what you would wear to an upscale fall wedding. Not a backyard barbecue, an actual dressy affair with good lighting and a nice dinner. That mental image alone solves ninety percent of the styling questions I get.
The dressier the better. Flowy gowns, rich fabrics, a little sparkle if that's your vibe. Fall gives you permission to go bigger and richer than you might for a summer session, so lean into it.
This one surprises people, but it makes a huge difference in how polished your gallery looks. Solid colors photograph beautifully because they let your face and your bump be the star of the photo instead of competing with a loud print.
If you love a pattern and really want to wear one, that is totally fine. Just keep it to one person in the photo. Everyone else should coordinate in solids that pull a color from that pattern. So dad might be in a solid that matches a color in your dress, rather than everyone wearing a different print. Mixing textures like a chunky knit next to a silky gown gives you depth and visual interest without the chaos that patterns can bring.
For autumn sessions, I always point clients toward jewel tones, creams, and warm browns. Think emerald, deep wine, mustard, rust, and camel. These colors feel rich and cozy without looking like you raided a Halloween store.
If you want to lean into classic fall colors like yellow, orange, and brown, that works beautifully too. And if you want something with a little more contrast and drama, pull in blue or purple tones, since those sit opposite yellow and orange on the color wheel and create that gorgeous pop against a fall backdrop.
Here's my favorite part of fall sessions in Maryland. The weather is unpredictable. One week it's seventy five and sunny, the next it's forty five and pouring. That is exactly why I built out my private studio in Pasadena, Maryland, so we never have to gamble on the weather.
My studio is fully stocked with a client closet of over 250 pieces, plus props, accessories, and backdrops designed to bring that cozy fall feeling indoors. We can create a gorgeous fall inspired session without a single worry about rain, wind, or freezing temperatures. You show up, and we handle the rest, styling included if you need it.
Whether you're searching for a maternity photographer in Annapolis, a maternity photographer in Baltimore, or you're anywhere in Anne Arundel County, this studio setup means your fall gallery turns out beautifully no matter what the sky decides to do that day.
If you're a mama in Maryland dreaming of a beautiful, cozy, jewel toned maternity session this fall, I would be so honored to be your photographer. Between the private studio, the client closet, and styling guidance every step of the way, all you have to do is show up and let's make some magic together.
Reach out and let's get your fall session on the calendar before the best dates fill up.
