Here’s a secret nobody tells you about this job. Half of it happens before I ever pick up the camera.
People think being a photographer means standing behind a lens and clicking a button. What they don’t see is everything that happens in the ten minutes before that click, or the ten years it took me to learn how to make it look easy.
I didn’t plan on becoming a photographer. I was fourteen when a family member handed me a camera and something clicked (pun fully intended). Years later, pregnant with my own first baby, I showed up to my maternity session with printed pose instructions like a total nerd. The photographer looked at me and said I clearly had an eye for this. She wasn’t wrong.
Now, over a decade later, I run my own studio in Pasadena, Maryland, and I get to do the thing that lit me up at fourteen for a living. I’m a mom myself, and most of my clients are too, so when I say I get it, I actually mean it.
I’m adjusting a hand three times so a ring doesn’t disappear behind a belly. I’m having a mama shift her weight so the pose reads soft instead of stiff. I’m telling her she looks incredible, because she does, and most days she needs to hear it.
I’m testing the temperature of the room so a five-day-old baby stays comfortable. I’m waiting through a feeding without complaint. I’m holding a pose steady for ten minutes so it looks effortless in the final gallery.
I’m chasing a toddler across the studio floor in heels. I’m cracking jokes nobody but a four-year-old finds funny, on purpose, because that’s the laugh I need for the shot. My friends call me a feral toddler myself, so honestly this part comes naturally.
I’m coaching a business owner who has never had to be “the face of her brand” before. I’m telling her where to put her hands, how to stand so she looks confident instead of stiff, and reminding her that the camera isn’t the enemy here.
None of that behind-the-scenes work shows up in the final photo. What shows up is a mom who looks like she was made for this. A newborn who looks peacefully asleep instead of mid-meltdown. A business owner who finally looks like the expert she already is.
That’s the job. Not just taking the picture. Building the moment that makes the picture worth taking.
If you’re a mom or a business owner in the Baltimore or Annapolis area, this is exactly what you get when you work with me: someone who knows how to get you there, not just someone standing behind a camera.
[Check out my behind-the-scenes reel here] to see this in action, or [book your session] to experience it yourself.
I’m based in Pasadena, Maryland, and serve families and business owners throughout the Baltimore to Annapolis corridor and Anne Arundel County.
Maternity, newborn, family, and personal branding photography, all in my private studio.
Not at all. Guiding you through every pose and expression is my job, not yours.
