The Ultimate Hospital Bag Checklist for First-Time Moms in Maryland, DC & Northern Virginia

As a maternity photographer serving Annapolis, Baltimore, Washington DC, and Northern Virginia, I've spent years talking with expectant mothers during one of the most exciting seasons of their lives.

And if there's one thing nearly every first-time mom asks in the third trimester, it's this:

"What should I actually pack in my hospital bag?"

Between organizing the nursery, attending baby showers, finishing work projects, and preparing for delivery, it can feel overwhelming trying to remember everything you'll need.

The good news? You don't need to bring half your house to the hospital.

Here's my complete hospital bag checklist to help you feel prepared, comfortable, and confident as you get ready to welcome your baby.

When Should You Pack Your Hospital Bag?

Most OBs recommend having your hospital bag packed by 35–36 weeks.

Even if your baby arrives right on schedule, you'll appreciate having one less thing to worry about during those final weeks.

I always tell my maternity clients that the last month of pregnancy has a way of speeding up unexpectedly. One moment you're scheduling your maternity portraits and designing your nursery, and the next you're timing contractions.

Having your bag packed early creates peace of mind.

When Is the Best Time to Schedule Maternity Photos

Essentials for Mom

Important Documents

  • Driver's license or ID
  • Insurance card
  • Hospital registration paperwork
  • Birth plan (if you have one)
  • Emergency contact information

Comfortable Clothing

Leave the fitted outfits at home.

Instead, pack:

  • Soft robe
  • Nursing-friendly pajamas
  • Comfortable nightgowns
  • Nursing bras
  • Loose postpartum clothing
  • Warm socks
  • Slip-on shoes

Remember: comfort always wins.

Toiletries

Hospital toiletries are often very basic.

Pack:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Hairbrush
  • Dry shampoo
  • Face wash
  • Moisturizer
  • Lip balm
  • Deodorant
  • Hair ties
  • Makeup essentials if desired

Many of my clients enjoy bringing a few beauty favorites. Not because they need to look perfect, but because familiar routines can feel grounding during a major life event.

What to Wear for Maternity Photos

Recovery Must-Haves

Your postpartum recovery deserves just as much preparation as labor itself.

Consider packing:

  • High-waisted underwear
  • Long phone charger
  • Nipple cream
  • Nursing pads
  • Peri bottle (if preferred)
  • Heating pad
  • Comfortable pillow from home

One item that often gets overlooked?

A lightweight blanket from home. Hospitals can feel surprisingly cold.

What to Pack for Baby

Thankfully, babies need less than most parents expect.

Bring:

  • Going-home outfit
  • Newborn outfit
  • 0–3 month outfit
  • Swaddle blanket
  • Baby blanket for photos
  • Infant car seat (installed before delivery)

Many hospitals provide diapers, wipes, and basic newborn supplies.

What Your Partner Should Pack

Partners often get forgotten in the packing process.

Make sure they bring:

  • Change of clothes
  • Toiletries
  • Snacks
  • Phone charger
  • Water bottle
  • Pillow
  • Entertainment during downtime

A comfortable partner is often a more helpful partner.

Don't Forget the Little Luxuries

This is where I encourage moms to think beyond the practical.

Pregnancy is a once-in-a-lifetime season.

Bring things that help you feel like yourself:

  • Favorite skincare products
  • Silk eye mask
  • Cozy socks
  • A beautiful robe
  • Your favorite playlist
  • Essential oils (if approved by your provider)

Small comforts can make a big difference.

One More Thing You'll Never Regret

Your Maternity Portrait Session.

Long after the hospital bag is unpacked, the diapers are gone, and your newborn has grown into a toddler, you'll remember how this season felt.

The anticipation.

The excitement.

The quiet moments before everything changed.

That's one reason so many of the mothers I photograph throughout Annapolis, Baltimore, Washington DC, and Northern Virginia choose to document pregnancy before their baby arrives.

Not because they need more photos.

Because they want to remember this chapter.

The beautiful curve of their bump.

The anticipation of meeting their baby.

The confidence and strength that motherhood requires before the baby even arrives.

Years from now, those images often become some of the most meaningful artwork displayed in their homes.

So don't forget to schedule your maternity photography session.

Final Thoughts

Packing your hospital bag isn't just another task on a checklist.

It's one of the final milestones before meeting your baby.

Pack the essentials.

Bring a few comforts from home.

Give yourself grace.

And most importantly, take time to celebrate this extraordinary season of life before it becomes a memory.

Whether you're preparing for delivery in Annapolis, Baltimore, Washington DC, Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, McLean, Bethesda, or anywhere throughout the DMV, I hope this checklist helps you feel a little more prepared for the journey ahead.

You've got this, mama.
